A massive thanks go out to the parents of the U8s who worked tirelessly throughout the day to make it such a success.

Also thanks to the parents of the participants from the many clubs who chose to spend their day with us.

There was even some time taken out of the busy playing schedule for some dancing “Cobra Style”

Luke Kerr Gala Day – under 8 Green

On Sunday 19th May the “Cawldron” came alive with over 150 kids from the Under 8 teams across the Illawarra enjoying the annual Luke Kerr Gala Day.

The weather gods shone down on a fun filled day with 4 games of football played by each team. The Under 8 Green team had 2 wins and 2 losses on the day, with everyone in the team making the most of the opportunity to play other teams and to better their skills on the field, and of course they all enjoyed the “Gangnam Style” entertainment at the breaks.

The cake stall was amazing with a display of cakes and slices to rival the Easter Show. Thanks to all of the families for providing all the wonderful food and to the older RVJFC kids who walked around the fields selling cakes to the families who were watching the games.

Thank you to all of the U8 families for making the day a great success and to Stephen Smart for co-ordinating the teams and the between games entertainment.

Some kind words from our friends at Figtree who came along and enjoyed the Day

Hi Stephen

Just wanted to thank you for a fantastic day yesterday. Everything was very well run and the boys had a ball.

Playing the music reminded everyone we were there to have fun and the food was great.

The kids played on and off the field and really bonded as a team. I know that they will be better for the experience.

Thanks to all at RVJFC. See you next year!

Rd 6 U12.2 v Coniston

On a cold and very windy night Russell Vale took to the field against a Coniston team that beat us 9-0 back in 2011. Since that day I have seen an enormous improvement in the team and this was reflected in their latest performance. The Cobras certainly had the better of the first half and despite the cross field wind managed to get their passing game going right from the start. Blair Dunn, Christian Baade Mortimer, Jordan Errington and Harrison Benn all had goal scoring opportunities but were denied by the keeper. Bailey Baade Mortimer also went on a superb run and was blatantly brought down right on the edge of the box. Unfortunately Harrison Benn whom is normally lethal from free kicks and corners couldn’t get the better of the windy conditions.

Right on the stroke of HT a poor throw in our own half set up their striker to race through and score to give Coniston a 1-0 lead. It was a bitter blow especially after the way the lads had played but yet again another reminder of the concentration level needed in Division II.

In the second half Russell Vale were determined to get back on level terms and probably the best chance fell to last season’s Club Top Scorer, Jordan Errington but once again their keeper came out on top. As the game wore on Russell Vale appeared to run out of steam, Ethan Johnson did well to save and keep the Cobras in the game but it was only a temporary reprieve. Coniston finished the stronger team and scored twice in the last few minutes to seal the match 3-0.

I always tell the lads before the game it’s not the result but the performance that counts and although this was our worst defeat of the season I was still pleased with the way they tried to play football. After the match both Coniston’s Coach and Manager personally congratulated me on Russell Vale’s “pass & move” style of football. They went on to say we were the first team they have come up against that didn’t play “kick & rush” and that I should keep going because one day they will be a really good team (it’s worth noting Coniston were Division I last season).

Having lost four of the first six games the confidence of the Cobras is bound to be low but it’s a good life experience for them. How they react to life’s setbacks is important, it shapes them for adulthood. As Coach I will continue to encourage the kids to learn and work hard at training, their performance is what we measure them on and eventually the results will follow.

Please don’t forget there is training tonight and the game next Saturday is away to Helensburgh (top of the league), doesn’t get any easier does it?

Rd 5 U16.2G v Figtree

Hi All,

The under 16s Girls played against Figtree on Friday night at Cawley Park. With a big crowd starting to fill the park the girls were beginning to feel the pressure. (Lots of Boys to Impress)

We had a full squad of 17 girls available on the night for the game. Our kick off time was 7.20pm. Because we are not allowed to have 17 girls on the team sheet one of the girls had to sit out. The girl that put her hand up was Emilee. Emilee plays as central defender for the team and does a great job in that position, so thanks Emilee for putting your hand up and you were missed.

The girls are currently sitting in equal 3rd place. We have 10 teams in our comp so the girls are doing a great job to be positioned in 3rd place. They are playing really well with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, this is a big improvement from last year. We are in a very good position so let’s keep winning girls!

Ok about the game, Figtree are currently sitting in 6th place, every time we play Figtree we play a good game of football. The game started at a very fast pace, both sides were really going for it, in stages the game was a little scrappy but as the game went on I started to breathe again. Our defence did well to hold out the Figtree forwards. The midfielders were doing there bit, passing some nice through balls up to our forwards, the forwards counter attacked several times but could not find the back of the net.

There were some moments where the girls lost concentration, but luckily with some persuasive words from Michael and I, the girls started to get back on track.

As the game continued the girls started to apply the pressure on the Figtree back line, forcing them to pass the ball back to their goalie in the 18 yard box, the goalie picked the ball up, that’s when the ref awarded a free kick to the Russell Vale girls. Ash and Madi combined well by Madi laying the ball off to Ash and she placed the ball in the back of the net. Great goal Ash.

With only 5 min to go Figtree applied the pressure once again but the Russell Vale girls held tight to take the win 1 – 0 well done girls keep up the great work!!

Rd 5 U12.2 v Oak Flats

The first ten minutes or so were a little bit scrappy as both sides set out to impose their game plan. After a lethargic start Russell Vale eventually started to put some passes together and Harrison Benn hit a good effort from distance but their keeper got it at the second attempt. The only time the home team looked dangerous was from a couple of corners, both times their centre half rose above our defence only to place his header over the bar.

Then at the other end Russell Vale made their corner count. Harrison Benn’s cross caused havoc in the Oak Flats six yard box, a mad scramble ensued and Jordan Errington was in the right place at the right time to bundle the ball over the line. Doesn’t matter how they go in they all count. On the stroke of HT Christian Baade Mortimer almost added a second after a superb run that left four defenders in his wake but their keeper did well to save at the near post. So at HT the score remained 1-0 to Russell Vale.

After the restart Russell Vale had another opportunity to make the game safe when a superb reverse ball from Jordan Errington put Blair Dunn away but again their goalie was equal to the shot. As the game wore on Oak Flats sensed they could still get something from the match and in the last 10 mins had Russell Vale penned in their own half. First Tom Curran topped a fine individual game by clearing a shot off the line, then soon after Ethan Johnson made a good save to deny Oak Flats. As the clock run down we gave away possession in our 18 yard box and Oak Flats took full advantage, even though Ethan Johnson managed to get both hands to the shot he couldn’t prevent it crossing the line to make the final score 1-1.

A draw away from home to last season’s Division II Runners Up is not a bad result but conceding an equaliser so late in the game made it feel more like a defeat. Full credit to Oak Flats they made it hard going for us and deserved their point.

So for the third consecutive game our lack of concentration in the final minutes of the game has cost us points. Last season many of the games were all over by half time, so I believe it’s just a case of developing the right mindset to play 100% until the final whistle. As for the numerous substitutions it shouldn’t matter which 11 players are on the pitch they are all capable of doing a good job. We win as a team, we lose as a team and sometimes we draw.

Rd 4 U12.2 v Albion Park

Right from the start Albion Park played very fast aggressive football and didn’t give Russell Vale time to settle on the ball. On literally our first breakaway into Albion Parks 18 yard box we won a corner and Harrison Benn curled the free kick into the top corner of the net to give the Cobras a 1-0 lead after 12 mins. To be fair to our opponents it was against the run of play. It did however give the Cobras a bit of confidence and we started to string a few passes together but the front players of Blair Dunn, Jordan Errington and Riley Hanlon were unable to create any clear cut chances to extend the lead. So at HT the score remained 1-0 to Russell Vale.
